Instagram Partnership Ads vs boost
This page is not legal advice and is not a substitute for a lawyer. Have an attorney in your jurisdiction review any contract, licence, or rights grant before you sign.
Ad products — same word, different SKUs
Briefs say “boost” for everything. On this site these are separate lines. Meta’s UI label Allow brand partner to boost means Partnership Ads permission — not the Instagram Boost button.
| SKU (say this) | Who the ad looks like | Who spends | What you grant |
|---|---|---|---|
| Brand-account ads (paid usage / dark post) | The brand | Their ad account | File + licence (days, territory, spend) — no Partnership permission |
| Creator Boost | Your organic post, boosted | Your Meta ad account (they prepay media) | You tap Boost; set budget + duration — never share your password |
| Partnership Ads / whitelist | You (usually with the brand in the header) | Their Ads Manager | Instagram: partnership ad code or Allow brand partner to boost (= Partnership permission) |
| TikTok Spark Ads | Your TikTok video | Their TikTok Ads account | Ad authorization code (7 / 30 / 60 / 365 days) |
If they say “boost included,” ask who spends and who taps Boost — then pick one row.
Brand-account ads vs Partnership Ads (Creator Boost is a third SKU above)
| Brand-account ads (paid usage) | Partnership Ad / whitelist | |
|---|---|---|
| Who is the advertiser | The brand’s page or a dark post | Your handle |
| What they need from you | The file + a paid licence | Instagram permission on a named post |
| Comments / social proof | Usually not your thread | Your post’s thread travels with the ad |
| Password | Never | Never — Instagram permission only |
| Typical add-on | +40–60% / 90 days (or +25–40% / 30d) | +40–60% / 30 days + spend cap |
| Revoke how | Licence end date + they must stop ads | Revoke Instagram permission + licence end date |
| If they say “we’ll just boost it” | Sell Brand-account ads (paid usage), not Partnership | Do not share a partnership code |
Quick quote on a $900 Reel
| They said | Product | Add-on | Total |
|---|---|---|---|
| “We’ll run ads from our page” (90 days) | Paid usage 90d | +$360 (40%) | $1,260 — no Instagram partner permission |
| “From your handle so it looks native” | Partnership / whitelist 30d | +$450 (50%) + $5k spend cap | $1,350 — grant after payment hold |
| “Boost included in the Reel” | Refuse / re-quote | $0 add-on is a gift | Send both rows above |
Same creative, ~$90 and an access decision apart. Full fee ladder: how much to charge for whitelisting.
How briefs mix the words
“Boost the Reel from your account”
Ask who taps Boost and who pays media. If you tap Boost with prepaid budget → Creator Boost (not whitelist). If they need a partnership ad code / Allow brand partner to boost (= Partnership Ads permission, not the Instagram Boost button) → Partnership Ads — use the whitelist fee table.
“We’ll run it as a dark post”
Brand-account ads. Sell paid usage. Do not share a partnership ad code unless they pay for Partnership Ads.
“Paid partnership label is enough, right?”
The label is disclosure, not a media licence. You can post as a paid partnership and still refuse ads — and turn off auto Allow brand partner to boost (= Partnership Ads permission, not the Instagram Boost button) until the payment hold clears.
Access hygiene
- Invite one ad account legal entity, not “whoever at the holding company”.
- Name the post ID in the email when you click allow.
- Calendar the revoke date the same day you grant.
- If they add a second ad account “for Europe”, that is a new invite and a new fee.
Cap spend and countries (Partnership Ads still need this)
Partnership permission lets them advertise as you. Budgets and geos live in their Ads Manager — not in the Instagram toggle. Write both limits on the invoice, then make the brand configure them before you share a partnership ad code. Meta Help cards for account spending limits and Locations live on how much to charge for whitelisting.
| Limit | Why | What you do | What they do in Ads Manager |
|---|---|---|---|
| Spend cap | Your face can carry a six-figure media plan on a flat +50% fee | Invoice: “max $X spend in the term” (+ overage % if sold) | Campaign / ad-set budgets + optional ad-account spending limit so ads pause at X |
| Territory | WW puts you in markets and comment languages you never priced | Invoice: “US only” or named countries — refuse blank “worldwide” | Ad set → Audience → Locations → those countries only |
Brand-account ads (paid usage) still need term + territory in the licence — just no partner invite.
Creator Boost from your Instagram account (step by step)
This is Creator Boost when the brief says “boost it on your profile” and you (not their Ads Manager as a partner) put paid reach behind the post. You keep the Boost button and the payment method; they prepay the media budget. If they instead need to spend from their ad account as your handle, that is Partnership Ads / whitelist — use the fee table, not this flow.
- Write the deal: daily or lifetime media budget, duration, countries, objective (profile visits / website / messages), and your boost service fee. Platform payment hold or prepaid media before you tap Boost.
- Use a professional Instagram account. Connect a Meta ad account you admin — do not add their team as ad-account admins unless you sold whitelist access.
- Open the live post → tap Boost (or Professional dashboard → Ad tools → choose the post).
- Set Goal, Audience (match the sold countries), Budget (daily amount that cannot exceed the prepaid cap), and Duration (end date on the invoice). Review → Create ad.
- Screenshot the Boost summary for the brand. Pause or end the boost when the term or spend cap is hit — Meta will not read your PDF for you.
- Refuse password sharing. If they say “just log into our Ads Manager from your phone,” stop and re-quote as Partnership Ads.
Worked DM: paste these two replies
| If they mean… | Paste | Total on $900 Reel |
|---|---|---|
| Ads from their page / dark post | “Paid usage 90d +40% — no Instagram partnership permission.” | $1,260 |
| Ads that show as you | “Partnership/whitelist 30d +50% + $5k spend cap — Instagram grant after the payment hold clears.” | $1,350 |
| They will not choose | “Pick a row or we ship organic only at $900.” | $900 |
Screenshot their answer. Ambiguous ‘boost’ in writing is how free Partnership permission starts.
A quote that names the Meta product
Example: content fee $900. They wrote “we’ll boost the Reel for four weeks”. Ask whose page spends and who taps Boost. If ads run from their page for 90 days, quote paid usage at 40% = $360, total $1,260, no Instagram partnership permission. If they say “from your handle so it looks native”, that is Partnership Ads: BlueRateCard default 50% for 30 days = $450 plus a $5,000 spend cap, total $1,350, grant after the payment hold clears. Same week, same Reel, $90 and an access decision apart. Putting both numbers in one email ends the “boost included” argument before you film.
If they cannot answer whose handle, do not grant Instagram permission “just in case”. A partnership code or Allow brand partner to boost (= Partnership Ads permission, not the Instagram Boost button) sitting unused is still a hole. Brands add campaigns later because the permission was already green. Treat unused access like a live licence: revoke it on the end date even if they never spent a dollar.

Partnership Ads vs boost questions
+What exact DM do I send when they say boost is included?
Send two totals: (1) Reel + paid usage on their page 90d, (2) Reel + Partnership/whitelist from your handle 30d. Ask which row. Example on $900: $1,260 vs $1,350. Do not grant Instagram partnership permission until they pick and pay.
+What is an Instagram Partnership Ad?
A paid ad that uses your account as an advertised identity through Meta’s Partnership Ads tools. Viewers usually see you and the brand in the header. You grant permission in the Instagram app (code, Allow brand partner to boost (= Partnership Ads permission, not the Instagram Boost button), or accept their request) — not by sharing an Ads Manager login.
+How is boosting different from a Partnership Ad?
Brand-page boost / dark post spends as the brand (paid-usage licence if they use your creative). “Boost from your account” means you tap Boost and they prepay media — still not Partnership Ads. Partnership Ads = they spend from their Ads Manager using your Instagram-granted permission.
+Which one needs an Instagram partnership permission from me?
Partnership Ads / whitelisting. A brand running their own cut of your video as a file usually does not. If they ask you for a partnership ad code or “Allow brand partner to boost” (= Partnership Ads permission, not the Instagram Boost button), that is the Partnership product — charge it as such.
+Should I charge more for Partnership Ads than brand-account ads or Creator Boost?
Yes. Partnership uses your identity and comment graph. BlueRateCard split: Brand-account ads (paid usage) about +25–40% for 30 days or +40–60% for 90 days; Creator Boost is usually a separate service fee + prepaid media; Partnership / whitelist +40–60% for 30 days with a spend cap.
+Can a brand run Partnership Ads after the post is 30 days old?
Only if the grant is still active. Age of the post is not a free extension. If the 30-day window ended, they buy another cell or they stop.
+How much is Partnership Ads on a $500 Reel for 30 days?
BlueRateCard band +40–60% = $200–$300, with a spend cap (e.g. $5,000). Brand-page paid usage on the same Reel is often +25–40% for 30 days (or +40–60% for 90 days) and needs no Instagram partnership permission.
+They want to boost the post from my Instagram account — is that whitelist?
No. That is Creator Boost: you (or an ad account you control) tap Boost on your post and set budget/days/geo yourself — brand prepays the media. Whitelist/Partnership Ads is different: they spend from their Ads Manager using your Instagram permission (code or Allow brand partner to boost (= Partnership permission)). Never hand them your password to “just boost it”.
Let the brand pick the Meta product on checkout
A usage-rights toggle on BlueRateCard is the Partnership/whitelist add-on. Brand-account paid usage can be a cheaper toggle. They pay before you click allow. Free for creators.
