Scope creep disputes on brand deals

Scope creep is not feedback — it is a new SKU wearing revision clothing. Draw an in/out matrix before the shoot: what the free round covers, what triggers a paid change order, and when you pause. Disputes shrink when the matrix is boring and written.

This page is not legal, tax, financial, or other professional advice. For a live deal, talk to a lawyer and a tax or finance specialist in your jurisdiction — BlueRateCard is not either.

Scope fights can become contract disputes. This matrix is practical guidance, not legal advice — have a lawyer review change-order language on larger deals.

In / out matrix: free revision vs paid change

Paste a version of this table into the SOW. When the Slack thread gets spicy, reply with the row — not a novel.

Example: $1,200 Reel. Mid-edit ask for a café scene + 3 Stories. Quote +35% ($420) for location add + Stories package ($450) before you leave the house again.

Send CO-14 as one email with both lines. Do not edit “while they think about it.”

How disputes usually start

Someone on the brand side joins late, watches a cut, and rewrites the brief in comments. Or legal adds claims after you filmed. Or “quick” extras pile up because you said yes once. Your defense is a locked brief, a veto window, and a change-order ID (CO-01) with dollars and a due-on-signature payment line.

Comment-thread briefs

Consolidate. One email with numbered notes = one round. Twelve drive comments over five days = they are rewriting scope — pause and re-quote.

Stakeholder whiplash

SOW names one approver. A VP appearing on day 4 of notes does not reset free rounds unless they buy another.

“Industry standard includes…”

Your card defines standard. If their standard needs more, it is a SKU — not a lecture.

Pause script and paper trail

“Thanks — items 2 and 5 are outside the approved brief (see matrix). I’ve paused the edit clock. Change order CO-14: $X, due before I resume. Items 1, 3, 4 fit round one and will ship within 48 hours of CO payment or of your written drop of 2 and 5.” That paragraph ends most bad-faith sprawl.

  • Never start unpaid reshoots to “keep goodwill” during a fee dispute.
  • Keep the original brief PDF; date every change order.
  • If they refuse to pay for scope but demand delivery, offer kill-fee exit — do not eat the work.
  • Usage creep (ads, whitelisting) is scope — bill it even if the cut is unchanged.
  • For six-figure fights over masters, call a lawyer before you release or delete files.

Scope creep disputes are won before the shoot, in the matrix and the brief. When something new appears, money moves first. Creators who edit for free while “figuring it out” teach brands that your calendar is a commons. Price the commons out of existence.

Contracts & delivery

Scope creep questions

+What counts as one free revision round?

One consolidated note set inside the SLA window (e.g. 3 business days) that fits the approved brief — trim, caption tweak, swap B-roll already shot. A new location, new SKU, or new script is not a revision; it is a change order.

+When does a new SKU become a change order?

The moment the deliverable list grows: extra Story frames, a second Reel hook, a duet, a whitelisting term that was not sold. Price it before you shoot or edit the addition.

+How do I price a mid-deal location add?

A working range is +25–40% of the content fee for a second practical location on the same day, or a new half-day rate if it needs another call sheet. Rush stacks if their timeline did not move.

+Should I pause editing until the change order is signed?

Yes. Editing “while they decide” is how unpaid scope becomes your problem. Send a one-line pause: “Edit clock resumes when change order CO-12 is signed and funded.”

+Who owns drafts if we dispute scope and stop?

Follow the contract. Often you keep copyright until paid; they should not run unpaid drafts as ads. If money and files are contested, pause delivery and talk to a lawyer before releasing masters.

+How do I quote a $1,200 Reel when they add a café scene + 3 Stories mid-edit?

Change order: location add ~+35% ($420) + Stories package ($450) = +$870 before you leave the house again. Pause the edit clock until CO is signed and funded.

Sell the SKU they actually need

BlueRateCard packages are paid before you start, with a 48-hour brief veto so scope is clear while funds are held on the platform. You keep 100% of your rate; brands pay 5% per deal, capped at $100. Free for creators.
