Escrow vs deposit vs Net terms for creators
This page is not legal, tax, financial, or other professional advice. For a live deal, talk to a lawyer and a tax or finance specialist in your jurisdiction — BlueRateCard is not either.
Three-way comparison
Risk here means “who is hurt if the other side flakes after work starts.”
| Dimension | Platform hold / escrow (full fee held) | Deposit (e.g. 50% to you) | Net terms (e.g. Net 30) |
|---|---|---|---|
| Risk to creator | Low if you wait for the hold before shooting | Medium — second half can still vanish | High — you finance the whole campaign |
| Risk to brand | Low — funds release on delivery conditions | Medium — they prepaid half to your account | Low on cash — high on your willingness to work |
| When you can safely shoot | When platform shows funds held | After deposit clears; still risky if balance is soft | Only if you accept being unpaid until due date + lag |
| Cash timing for you | On release after delivery | 50% early, 50% later (hopefully) | After due date, often +1–3 AP cycles |
| Best fit | New brands, agencies, anything over ~$1k | Repeat clients with clean history | Enterprise AP that already paid you on time — still price the float |
| Worst fit | Brands that refuse any pre-funding on principle | First-time brands on big fees | Cold DMs, vague LLCs, “pay when campaign ends” |
| Dispute pattern | Arguments shift to delivery definition — keep proof tight | “We paid the deposit, why are you holding Stories?” | Silence from AP after go-live |
Escrow here means funds locked for the deal (licensed escrow or a platform payment hold with delayed payout). Stripe does not offer escrow accounts — a Connect hold is not the same as a Venmo screenshot.
Same $2,400 Reel, three cashflow stories
Platform hold path
Day 0: brand funds $2,400 (+ their 5% platform fee, max $100 on BlueRateCard). Day 5: you post. Day 5: release. You never wonder if AP “ran the wire.”
Deposit path
Day 0: $1,200 lands in your account. Day 5: you post. Invoice for $1,200 Net 30. Day 40–55: maybe. You ate production risk on half the fee.
Net-30 path
Day 0: handshake. Day 5: you post. Invoice due day 35. Payment day 50–80 if you are lucky. You were a short-term lender at 0% interest.
Worked quote sheet: $1,800 Stories package
| Structure | Day-0 money | Your risk | Show on PDF |
|---|---|---|---|
| Platform hold (default) | $1,800 held | Low | $1,800 prepaid / platform hold |
| 50% deposit + held | $900 in account + $900 held | Medium | $900 due now; $900 before shoot |
| Net 30 full fee | $0 | High | $1,980 Net 30 (+10%) — or refuse |
Print two columns (prepaid vs Net). Let them pick; do not silently accept their MSA default.
How to choose without a 40-message negotiation
- Put platform payment hold as the default SKU payment method on the public card.
- Offer deposit+held-balance as a named alternative for repeat buyers.
- Treat Net terms as a priced exception — e.g. +10–15% for Net 30, or decline.
- Never mix “Net after performance” into the content fee; that is a bonus product.
- If they cannot fund a platform hold on a $900 Story set, believe them — and walk.
This page deliberately does not walk the five production steps — that lives on the get-paid-upfront guide. Here the job is comparison: who carries risk, when cash moves, which structure matches which relationship. Creators stay free on BlueRateCard; brands pay a capped 5%. Pick a platform payment hold when you want the comparison table to stay theoretical.
Deal-size defaults (pick a column)
Industry write-ups often push “50/50 forever.” That is incomplete. Match structure to fee size and relationship age — then write one sentence on the quote so AP cannot reinvent it after you deliver.
| Deal size (content fee) | New brand / agency | Repeat payer (2+ clean wires) | Price the float? |
|---|---|---|---|
| Under $1,000 | 100% platform payment hold or 100% before shoot | Platform hold or short Net 7 on delivery | Usually no — just get paid |
| $1,000–$5,000 | Full platform hold preferred; else 50% deposit + 50% held | 50% deposit + Net 14 on balance, or platform hold | +8–12% if they insist on Net 30 with no hold |
| $5,000–$25,000 | Platform hold or milestones with holds before each stage | Milestones or platform hold; avoid pure Net 30 | +10–15% for Net 30; decline Net 60 |
| $25,000+ | Platform hold / milestone schedule in writing before preproduction | Same — size does not create trust by itself | Counsel + float pricing; do not DIY Net 45 |
Example: $3,200 Reel, first-time DTC. Default = full platform payment hold. If they only offer 50% wire now, put the other 50% in a hold before the shoot — not on Net 30 after go-live.
Hybrid structures that still respect risk
Reasonable hybrids: 50% deposit to you + 50% in a platform hold before shoot; 100% platform payment hold with a 48-hour brief veto; Net 14 only after two clean paid campaigns. Unreasonable hybrids: 20% now, rest “after the always-on budget refreshes,” or Net 60 from their internal approval of your “performance.” Write the hybrid in one sentence on the quote so AP cannot reinvent it later.

Payment structure comparison questions
+What should I quote on a $1,800 Story set: escrow, deposit, or Net?
Default: $1,800 in a platform payment hold before shoot (BlueRateCard checkout — not licensed escrow). Deposit alternative: $900 now + $900 held before day-of. Net 30 on the full $1,800: refuse on a new brand, or price ~$1,980 (+10%) and still prefer the hold. Small fees die from admin, not from creative.
+Which payment structure puts the least risk on the creator?
A platform payment hold (or licensed escrow on rare deals) for the full fee before production, with release on delivery, usually wins. You are not financing the brand, and they are not wiring you money they fear you will vanish with — funds stay locked for the deal until release.
+When would a brand prefer Net terms over escrow?
When their AP policy is built around invoices after goods/services, or they want float. That preference is about their treasury, not your fairness. You can decline or price Net as a financing add-on.
+Can I mix a deposit with Net-30 on the balance?
Yes, and creators do it constantly — it is also how the second half goes missing. If you mix, cap Net short (Net 7–14 on delivery) or hold the balance in a platform payment hold instead of true Net.
+How does a 5% brand fee change the escrow conversation?
On BlueRateCard, brands pay 5% per deal capped at $100 while creators stay free. That small processing cost is usually cheaper for everyone than a disputed $3,000 invoice and two weeks of Slack.
+What should a first deal with a new DTC brand use by default?
Full platform payment hold or 100% before shoot on small fees. Save pure Net terms for companies that have already paid you cleanly more than once — and even then, keep due dates short.
+Is a Venmo or Zelle screenshot the same as escrow?
No. A screenshot is a claim, not a hold. “Escrow” in creator deals usually means funds locked against the deal until delivery — either a licensed escrow provider or a platform payment hold. Stripe does not offer escrow accounts; a Connect platform can hold a captured balance and delay payout. If they “sent it” but you cannot see a held balance or platform hold, treat it as unpaid and do not shoot.
Default the card to platform payment hold
BlueRateCard holds brand funds on the platform before you create (delayed payout until delivery — not a licensed escrow account). Creators are free; brands pay 5% capped at $100. Waitlist if you are done explaining Net-45 to strangers.
